LONELINESS
Loneliness is one of the greatest problems affecting people today. There is the difference between "aloneness" and "loneliness". One may be alone and not be lonely; on the other hand, one may feel loneliness amid a throng of people. A medical doctor once made this statement: "The longer I practice medicine, the sure I am that there's no condition so acute, so universal and so devastating as just plain loneliness and doctors can't cure it. Only the victims themselves can." I read of an elderly minister who said, "After many years of serving lonely people, I am convinced that loneliness is ninety percent self-pity. The victim shuts himself in and others out. Others avoid him, for nobody loves a 'self-pitier' " We must depend upon God as our source to overcome loneliness. "Lo I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). He has promised the Christian the great assuring truth, "I will never leave thee or forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5). The cure for loneliness is to center the attention outside of self, whether one is alone or with others. Everyone feels lonely at one time or another, and this is one phase of living that must be controlled. We must recognize that God is the source of all comfort even for lonely hearts. The emptiness in our hearts must be filled by God and shared with him or else we will live fruitless and unfulfilled lives. Jesus came to take away our loneliness and make us rejoice over His abiding presence. We truly sing, "What a Friend We Have In Jesus." There is no greater friend! Loneliness can be dispelled when we allow the Lord to walk with us.
